Chinese officials indefinitely delayed the enforcement of the mandatory installation by computer makers of censorship software on all models sold. The Chinese government was bombarded with criticism and resistance by both it’s citizens and the computer industry. This software, called Green Dam-Youth, was advertised as an anti porn censorship software, but it has the potential to suppress all types of content at the government’s wishes.

Microsoft Will Subsidize Your First iPhone

    Sunday, June 28th, 2009

Microsoft will give you a 35% discount for your first iPhone as an effort to promote its new search service Bing.com. This means that you could get an 8G iPhone for 65 bucks thanks to Microsoft–a 3G S will run you 129 and a 32G iPhone will cost about $194.35 with Microsoft’s rebate program. At this point you are probably asking yourself, why would Microsoft help push Apple products (at the expense of its core business) just to promote its search service using the ever popular (Apple product) iPhone. Perhaps Google is an even bigger and more feared rival than Apple? With Google’s push towards online business office software, Microsoft’s bread and butter product suite, the Microsoft Office product suite, is directly threatened.

Here are the instructions for getting the deal:

    New iPhone Contracts Only:

1.) Visit AT&T Wireless website — validate your email address with Premier.
2.) Check your email; then click the link to your AT&T Premier Store
3.) Open a new tab with the same browser that your AT&T Premier Store is open in
4.) Go to Bing.com in the new tab and search “att wireless” or “at&t wireless”
5.) Click the 35% CashBack Sponsored Link
6.) Sign into your CashBack account and get redirected to the main AT&T Wireless page
7.) In the top right enter the term “Premier” into the search bar.
8.) Click the first link that reads “at&t premier login”
9.) You will get directed to the same Premier store you have open in the original tab
    10. NOW, you are in the Premier store under the CashBack AT&T Site

Intel Publishes Guidelines For Social Media For Employees

    Thursday, June 25th, 2009

While some PR and marketing departments fear the use of social media by employees for engaging dialogue with customers and the public in general, Intel is trying to work with it by publishing a document called “Social Media Guidelines” that contains rules of engagement for online social discussion. Social media can also be a terrific way for companies to engage customers in a more grassroots way, and many organizations are beginning to realize this.

Here are a few of the guidelines in Intel’s social media document:

    - Stick to your area of expertise and provide unique, individual perspectives on what’s going on at Intel and in the world.
    - Post meaningful, respectful comments-in other words, no spam and no remarks that are off-topic or offensive.
    - Always pause and think before posting. That said, reply to comments in a timely manner, when a response is appropriate.
    - Respect proprietary information and content, and confidentiality.
    - When disagreeing with others’ opinions, keep it appropriate and polite.
    - Know and follow the Intel Code of Conduct and the Intel Privacy Policy.
The full document containing the guidelines can be found here. http://www.intel.com/sites/sitewide/en_US/social-media.htm

In terms of publishing on blogs, Intel warns that authors often times publish directly and without oversight of a formal publishing process. Although Intel is loosening up control over some company generated content, the benefits may outweigh the challenges in that a more “balanced”, open and dynamic conversation may form with it’s customer base and greater public.

iPhone 3G S Launch Made Efficient

    Sunday, June 21st, 2009

In 2007, the launch of the iPhone was notorious for long lines and problems with AT&T service at stores–this was true for the 2008 iPhone 3G launch as well. However, the 2009 launch of the iPhone 3G S was seemingly spared from such headaches generally. Many stores have streamlined their launch day sales processes most significantly with separating pre-orders from walk-ins.

Youtube makes nice with the film industry

    Saturday, June 20th, 2009

Youtube launched an extension dedicated to video trailers to promote upcoming films. The trailers will be organized into four categories: “Latest,” “Popular,” “In Theatres,” and “Opening Soon.” Up until now, Apple has been the top location for distributed/viewing movie trailers. Hulu has also become a contender for distribution.

Although this Youtube extension is a bit sparse in content, film industry officials say that they plan to upload content into the new venue shortly.

Google Map: New Feature: What’s here

    Saturday, June 20th, 2009

Rather than simply scrolling around on a map and browsing buildings from the exterior, Google Maps now allows users to click a new button (feature tool) called “What’s here?” to see the contents of many pieces of real estate. This tool takes into account the zoom level you are presently accessing and gives you content on the buildings of that location….in essence this feature is applicable at different zoom levels.
