Internet 2.0: The future of the internet “the grid”

Friday, July 31st, 2009

The future of the internet looks fast, very fast. Many of the scientists who first developed the internet are working on its next generation. Supposedly, the internet (2.0) will be 10,000 times faster than a typical broadband connection. Users would be able to download an entire feature film within a flash.

The latest version of the new internet, called “The Grid” was developed by a particle physics centre called CERN, who created the original web. The grid will have enough power to be able to transmit holographic images.

This summer we will see this project in action and experience its full power. “Red Button Day” will be the ignition day for the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the new particle accelerator built to probe the origin of the universe. When the particle accelerator is turned on so will “The Grid” be turned on to capture the data it generates.

California Reviews Violent Game Legislation

Friday, July 24th, 2009

Since 2005 the State of California has been trying to ban the sale or rental of video games to minors. The law was thrown out in 2007. Again in Feb. 2009, US Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit voted no on a law to require limitations on selling violent video games to minors. In the case, Video Software Dealers Association v. Schwarzenegger, the outcome was cited as an invalid content based restriction on freedom of speech.

Now, the California’s Psychiatric and Psychological Association along with State Senator Leland Yee has filed an amicus curiae brief petitioning the court to review the law again, as they submit new materials that explain the purpose behind the law in more detail.

The video game industry has filed an amicus brief in return to dispute the brief submitted by Senator Yee.

Here is an excerpt from the document: “Parents can read a book, watch a movie or listen to a CD to discern if it is appropriate for their child. These violent video games, on the other hand, can contain up to 800 hours of footage with the most atrocious content often reserved for the highest levels and can be accessed only by advanced players after hours upon hours of progressive mastery. … Notably, extended play has been observed to depress activity in the frontal cortex of the brain which controls executive thought and function, produces intentionality and the ability to plan sequences of action, and is the seat of self-reflection, discipline and self-control.”

IBM Becomes Model Of Stability In A World Of Delays

Wednesday, July 22nd, 2009

IBM announced the on time release of it’s new server chip: Power7 Chip, which is a rarity in the current environment where many companies are forced to announce delays and project cancellations. The chip is planned to release in the first half of next year.

Servers that currently use the Power6 chip will be able to replace it with the newer technology at the time of release. IBM and Sun, companies that build Unix based powerhouse servers for banks, telecommunications companies and other large businesses, build their own chips which has been a great source of profit for the companies.

With the bleak economy, Sun has struggled as many businesses have held off new purchases — making due with existing technologies. Oracle caused a big disruption in the server market with its take over of Sun. Sun has claimed about one-third of the Unix server sales.
