    Saturday, February 25th, 2012

For web developers that need some context when working with the Adwords API to build custom applications, Google has a library of examples to work from.  The client libraries code examples for Google Adwords API has undergone numerous revisions recently. This library is useful for web developers that need help troubleshooting or just to understand the context around a particular issue….oh ya, and also they are great for learning from scratch as well.

Recent changes to the Adwords API include:

    • Code examples are now oriented around typical use cases
    • Number of input parameters was reduced — forget those specific specific object IDs
    • For each example the code is wrapped into a function which can be called with parameters.
    • Best practices are now included in the examples + comments!

Oracle claims to have made MySQL Cluster 7.2 70 times faster than before

    Sunday, February 19th, 2012

MySQL database logoOracle acquired the open source MySQL database in 2010 with the purchase of Sub Microsystems. Many in the open-source web development community were concerned that there would be a conflict of interest between the company’s licensed product and the open-source version. Purhaps MySQL is in good hands?

Oracle claims to have made the most recent installment of MySQL, the new MySQL Cluster 7.2 database, 70 times faster than previous versions. The new MySQL version will be able to do now 1.05 billion reads per minute.

This doesn’t necessarily mean that the web development community is without fear. Some are growing concerned that Oracle will fork the project–making a paid version that will have greater care and attention than the open-source version.

Jotform taken offline without explanation by GoDaddy

    Saturday, February 18th, 2012

Jotform web form builderJotform, a handy web service that powers hundreds of thousands of web forms for websites, was unexpectedly shut down at the domain level by it’s domain management provider GoDaddy this week. Godaddy did not provide an explanation as to why the service was interrupted, beyond the explanation that it was part of an investigation.

It turns out that the Secret Service requested that Godaddy shut down Jotform suddenly and without due process. Godaddy complied. It appears that Government agencies and Godaddy are acting as if SOPA has passed. This is essentially a seizure of property without due process, and the seizure took place merely during an investigation.

Ultimately this act affected thousands of businesses in the US that rely on Jotform as a service provider. Because of Jotform’s popularity, the case received immediate media attention, and a number of excellent publications discussed the case including Arstechnica, Wired, CNET, Techdirt, Forbes, Geek.com and TheNextWeb.

Jotform’s service was turned back on, but their business will be seriously affected as a result of the incident. This US company will need to work hard to restore confidence and win back business.

    Shared lists make Analytics easier

    Sunday, February 12th, 2012

As marketers manage numerous campaigns using the Google Analytics website, it could get quite tiresome inputting duplicate data in the process of creating campaign after campaign. Google introduced a new tool called shared lists to help make building similar campaigns easier.

Whether you are a marketing agency or a solo practitioner, the newly introduced placement exclusion lists and list suggestions may help reduce carpal tunnel.

    Shared lists in Analytics

Placement exclusion lists in Google Analytics will allow advertisers and marketers to input lists of websites on which they don’t want their PPC ads to appear (within the Content Network).  These lists act as master lists which can be used across multiple PPC campaigns in their account.

Google Analytics default search engine list updated

    Sunday, February 12th, 2012

Google Analytics has a default search engine list used for tracking a website’s progress with organic search ranking. A webmaster or user can add a new search engine to that list manually, but every now and then, Google updates their analytics tool with new search engines that are gaining in popularity.

In February, Google Analytics will contain some new default search engines, including:

    • Rakuten: http://rakuten.co.jp
    • Biglobe: http://biglobe.ne.jp
    • Goo: http://goo.ne.jp
    • Startsiden: http://www.startsiden.no/sok

In addition, Google has changed the way search engines are recognized within Google Analytics. There have been problems with a search.com getting way too many organic referrals, which was caused by an inaccurate attribution using URLs containing the word “search” and a query parameter “q”. What was happening was search engines such as Conduit, Babylon and others were not getting credit for their referrals, and the logic that caused this problem has been updated.

Websites and businesses that rely on organic traffic from search engines may see a shift in their minor search referrals with this update. Google has added the known large customized search engines to help prevent this problem in the future.
