Spam now accounts for 90% of email traffic due to February surge

February was a bad month for email. Due to a surge in the month of February, spam now accounts for 90% of email traffic according to Symantec. Two botnets, named Grum and Rustock, helped this spam surge by pushing up spam levels 5.5 percent. The Grum botnet came back from a period of plateau to increase activity by 51%. The rise of both botnet systems were linked to activity related to Canadian pharmaceutical spam.

Spam levels reached 93.4% of all e-email in Italy last month
Denmark was at 92.8%
Russia at 91.8%
US was 90.2%

New Adwords Toolbar For Segment Data For SEM and Web Performance Monitoring

Adwords has been providing more data to expand the capabilties of its analysis tool. Now, with the advent of new analytics data such as the insights functionality, Adwords has implemented a new toolbar to filter and analyze campaign data. This toolbar makes it easier to access the new reporting functionality. The toolbar will provide quick filters for the segment data that you are working with and gain insights into performance across different networks or time periods.

More Language Support For Web Analytics

Analytics, Google’s web traffic analysis tool, has added six new language options. The new languages are: Bulgarian, Catalan, Greek, Lithuanian, Slovak and Vietnamese. Now Google Analytics supports 31 languages.

To switch to another language option, there is a control button at the top right corner of the Analytics login page.

Twitter Website Adds Local Trends Data To Sidebar

Twitter added a new feature to give users more current information based on it’s aggregated behavior data. In the right hand navigation bar of the Twitter website, you will notice a new feature called “Trending.” This link allows you to select from a collection of geographic regions to see popular trends. Currently, only 15 U.S. cities and five non-U.S. countries are on the “Trends” list, but it is highly likely that Twitter will expand the aggregated data tools since there is overwhelming interest.

Cyberattack Targets Chinese Human Rights Websites

The websites of Chinese Human Rights Defenders (CHRD), Independent Chinese Pen (ICPC), New Century News, Canyu and Civil Rights and Livelihood Watch (CRLW) were attacked on January 23 and 24 by hackers of an unknown origin.

A distributed denial of service (DDOS) brought down the websites for approximately 16 hours. At the height of the incident, the frequency of the attack was at 2GB per second. It was the most intense attack that their Internet Service Provider has experienced in the history of their business.

Prior to this DDOS attack, malware was installed on the server of the websites for CHRD and New Century News. Some of the attacks have coordinated with “sensitive” dates for the country of China.

Facebook Creates A Mood Index Based On Status Messages

Facebook has launched a project called the “Gross National Happiness Index” or GNH which aggregates and analyzes data taken from status updates.

Currently the index only takes data from United States-based Facebook users who have set English as their default language, which represents one forth of the popular social networking site’s user body.

Facebook Prime Time Identified In Study

The “prime time” of Facebook has been identified in a study by marketing firm Virtue based on 200 million fan impressions on Facebook pages. Such findings are extremely relevant to social marketing firms that use such media for PR, traffic building, customer relationship development, SEM, and market penetration.

The study identified Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday as the best days for social engagement on Facebook. The research reveals that Facebook users click on links in fan pages 10% of the time on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and 9% of the time on Mondays. Other days of the performed less well.

New Google Tool To Predict Economic Indicators Using Search Volume

Google Finance has a new feature that displays search volume as it relates to economic sectors, using Google Trends as an engine. One goal of this tool would be to predict economic indicators using search volume data. Google Domestic Trends is available for download.

The tool contains 23 indexes: Advertising & marketing, Air travel, Auto buyers, Auto financing, Automotive, Banking & personal finance, Business, Computers & electronics, Construction, Credit & lending, Durable goods, Finance & insurance, Furniture, Industries, Investing, Jobs, Luxury goods, Mortgage, Real estate, Rental, Retail trade, Travel, and Unemployment. Each index value is baselined at 1.0 on January 1, 2004 and is calculated and displayed on the Google Finance charts as a 7-day moving average.
