Can NYC become the next big tech hub?

    Sunday, October 30th, 2011

Silicon Alley is just not enough. NYC wants more.

NYC tech hubThe city has posted a tech competition for building a tech campus. The goal was to solicit plans and pick one in order to strengthen the city’s tech allure. The problem was that the city got too many great proposals, and now they may have to decide how to entertain more than one of them. It’s a happy problem.

The original idea was to build a tech campus in either the Brooklyn Navy Yard, Governors Island or Roosevelt Island. The city was dually impressed with Cornell’s proposal and Stanford University’s proposal. It didn’t end there. With the entrance of NYU, Carnegie Mellon, and Columbia University, the contest grew into a treasure trove of opportunity for the city. Many of the schools have alliances to other institution both national and international, which fuels the excitement around their individual plans.

The seemingly best bet is to expand the original scope of the contest. Perhaps the city will pay more than originally expected–$100 million to support the development of the campus. Multiple esteemed campuses would put New York City’s plan of being the next tech hub into hyperdrive.

    Wednesday, June 16th, 2010

Twenty-five more cities have are planned to receive the fastest 3G wireless service that uses a technology called HSPA+ from  T-Mobile USA.

Los Angeles, Seattle, Houston, Dallas, Pittsburgh, and New Orleans are among the cities that already benefit from the faster service. New York, Las Vegas, and Philadelphia have since had the technology deployed across their metropolitan areas.

T-mobile claims that the HSPA+ technology can deliver speeds that compare with 4G access with theoretical speeds of 21Mbps (download) and actual tried and true speeds of 5Mbps to 8Mbps for download.

Currently, only a small selection of devices are equipped with the proper data sticks that work with HSPA+. Most of these units are laptops–no handsets are available yet.
