Youtube refocuses it’s interface design with a new emphasis on channels

    Saturday, December 3rd, 2011

Youtube’s new homepage and interface design, besides having a new color scheme, places more emphasis on channels, trends and the social element of video content, which is shows Google’s focus on social content as demonstrated with Plus.

There is now an emphasis on the activity of friends with better integration with Google+ and Facebook. Certainly, these recent changes will be dramatically favored by advertisers that now have a new way to engage with Youtube’s global audience, as well as gain better insights. The new design also moves Youtube towards becoming more like a traditional TV broadcaster. Youtube has begun to commission it’s own video content, which paves the way for making the website a destination for longer-form online entertainment.

Long-form video is predicted to be the biggest areas of growth in online video – TDG estimates it will make up nearly 70% of online video by 2013. Long-form video with a social networking framework is a new and powerful direction for online video.

Record levels of web video usage in October

    Monday, November 28th, 2011

October was a big month for Youtube. Online video viewership was at an all time high for the social video website. Youtube set a new record of 20 billion views for a single month. Basically that is a little less than 50% of all videos watched in the US. The video website is averaging more than 7 hours of video watching per user during the month–the highest engagement of all websites, whether Facebook or Hulu.

Apple Lossless Audio Codec goes open source

    Saturday, October 29th, 2011

Audio download formatApple announced that they are releasing their Lossless Audio Codec (ALAC) as an open source project. The announcement was made on MacOSForge.

The Apple Lossless Audio Codec was developed by Apple and has been used on all of its platforms and devices for some years now. Similar to other lossless audio codecs, the ALAC offers audio compression without any loss in audio information. These lossless formats typically are not as small in file size as MP3s, which contain a loss of information with each generation.

One key advantage of ALAC over other codecs is that it is supported on all of Apple’s devices–such as Apple’s iPods and iOS devices. With this codec becoming open source, it means that new technologies can be spawned from this core tool–both for creation and playback of audio.

Nintendo Wii to get Hulu plus media content by 2012

    Saturday, October 22nd, 2011

Nintendo announced that it’s 3DS handheld and Wii console will be able to access Hulu premium content by the end of 2011. This content includes a wealth of streaming television catalog content. Access is a vital issue for all major streaming media services (obviously)–whether Hulu or Netflix. The partnership of audience to content is great for all parties. As Hulu has been struggling with access for nearly every conceivable device, this is a big win for the network–as they make a push for all platforms and devices: phones, tablets and consoles.

Additionally, Nintendo 3DS continues to evolve as a media and entertainment device, and this step helps to reinforce their brand as a premium entertainment device.

    Sunday, September 11th, 2011

Five people involved with running NinjaVideo.net were indicted by a grand jury in Alexandria, Virginia, on on conspiracy and copyright infringement charges. The DOJ posted that NinjaVideo had made “significant” income over it’s two and a half year stint of showing infringing copies of movies and TV shows. Their approx. $500,000 revenue came mostly from advertising and donations from February 2008 until June 2010.

Many of the movies and TV shows on the website were offered free of charge. Some of those videos and movies had not even left the theaters at the time of their airing on NinjaVideo (nor released on DVD), the DOJ stated in their press release.

Rumors of a Skype-based Facebook project

    Friday, July 1st, 2011

Clues and rumors combined, it appears that Facebook may be launching a new video chat product that is built on Skype and works in a browser.

Video web chat Facebook and Skype partnership

The new project has been built by the Seattle-based Facebook team in combination with the Skype team. There is a good chance that the new project will have a desktop component–as Facebook has been beefing up desktop development staff in Seattle.

This partnership could be fantastic for Skype. Currently, Skype supports 170 million users, but this new (possible) partnership could push Skype usage above 750 million users.

First CNN now Netflix – being sued for missing captions

    Sunday, June 19th, 2011

The National Association of the Deaf (NAD) is suing Netflix for not comforming to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) as they do not provide captions for the majority of their online streaming videos.  According to the suit, ADA law requires that all places of entertainment must offer “full and equal enjoyment” for individuals with disabilities.  According to this suit, the NAD is attempting to classify Netflix under Title III of the ADA. Netflix has made an attempt to add captions to a number of titles–albeit limited in selection.

AT&T to force users to consume less bandwidth

    Monday, March 14th, 2011

AT&T has confirmed that it will be forcing users to consumer less bandwidth or pay the price. For any user that consumes more than 150 GB in a month, they will be forced to pay an additional $10 for every 50 GB they consume.

This new model will certainly affect users that enjoy streaming movies and video online. It will also put a cramp in Netflix style. Based on different reports from the NY Times and Nielsen, many users will come dangerously close to this cap for just video consumption on PCs (excluding iPads, Blueray, Playstation and other internet connected devices). The growth of HD video could certainly take a performance hit as a result of the new measures.

An additional consideration is that data transfer overhead will account for a significant amount of traffic (consumption).

HD developments may take a backseat with such new bandwidth concerns. Netflix HD video currently streams at 720p, but some companies currently offer 1080p streams. This could be a short-term victory for traditional pay TV over internet TV.

Newspapers beat broadcasters for video streaming for Q3 of 2010

    Thursday, December 23rd, 2010

According to a new study by Brightcove and TubeMogul,  newspapers have surprisingly beat broadcasters for the most minutes of  streamed video to users in the third quarter of 2010.

The newspaper industry has been struggling to rebuild their business model and make better use of the internet as traditional advertising for print media dwindles. Many newspapers have found that video online is highly desired by users. The report, SPECIAL FEATURE: PEAK VIDEO ENGAGEMENT BY DAYS OFTHE WEEK AND TIMES OF DAY, QUARTERLY RESEARCH REPORT, Q3 2010, by Brightcove and TubeMogul shows how the volume of video content produced by newspapers for the web has more than doubled (51% growth) in the past quarter–focusing on a broad range of topics from major news events to niche topics. Web video for the newspaper industry grew about 110% compared to quarter 3 of 2009.

The report also provided more detailed information about video usage across the web, including stats by the hour and day for video activity online. Weekdays were the most active days of the week for watching video online–with Wednesday being the peak. Yet, Friday had the best engagement per view.
