    Apple unleashes a cloud over the music and web storage industries

    Apple has declared that the personal computer is “nolonger the central hub” in people’s digital lives. Today, they released a new web storage & syncing cloud service for digital media–music, photos, files and software. The service will automatically store files and media from any Mac, iPad or iPhone on Apple’s cloud servers. The new service has been introduced at the low, low, low price of …free.

    Say Goodbye MobileMe, hello cloud

    The service will make files and media from one Apple device available on all devices of an owner. This will remove the hassle of syncing between mobile devices and computers. The iCloud service will replace the failed MobileMe service, and it will add expanded capabilities–namely the syncing of files, documents, applications and photos.

    Spam now accounts for 90% of email traffic due to February surge

    February was a bad month for email. Due to a surge in the month of February, spam now accounts for 90% of email traffic according to Symantec. Two botnets, named Grum and Rustock, helped this spam surge by pushing up spam levels 5.5 percent. The Grum botnet came back from a period of plateau to increase activity by 51%. The rise of both botnet systems were linked to activity related to Canadian pharmaceutical spam.

    Country specific:
    Spam levels reached 93.4% of all e-email in Italy last month
    Denmark was at 92.8%
    Russia at 91.8%
    US was 90.2%

    Cyberattack Targets Chinese Human Rights Websites

    The websites of Chinese Human Rights Defenders (CHRD), Independent Chinese Pen (ICPC), New Century News, Canyu and Civil Rights and Livelihood Watch (CRLW) were attacked on January 23 and 24 by hackers of an unknown origin.

    A distributed denial of service (DDOS) brought down the websites for approximately 16 hours. At the height of the incident, the frequency of the attack was at 2GB per second. It was the most intense attack that their Internet Service Provider has experienced in the history of their business.

    Prior to this DDOS attack, malware was installed on the server of the websites for CHRD and New Century News. Some of the attacks have coordinated with “sensitive” dates for the country of China.

    Yahoo Gives Gmail Users A Deadline For Xoopit

    Gmail users have until November 13th to backup their files from the Xoopit servers–as Xoopit will nolonger support Gmail users after that date.

    Yahoo recently acquired Xoopit, a photo sharing application for web based email. The media in Xoopit’s, under ownership of Yahoo, will be purged in accordance with Yahoo’s 90-day data retention policy. Source media files however should still live on the Gmail servers as Xoopit only copies the media and leaves the source.

    As Cisco Enters Blade Server Market, Dell Preps Launch of New Product

    Dell Product Group announced plans to release a new line of blade servers built around virtualization when Intel launches its next iteration of Nehalem (Intel processor microarchitecture) processors. Dell will announce its product line after the Nehalem-EP chip line is released. Cisco’s entrance into the blade server market, with a project entitled “Project California”, will start with a focus also on virtualization.

    **Virtualization is the use of software to mask server resources, (ie. number and identity of individual physical servers, processors, and operating systems) from server users.

    **The first Nehalem processor was released on the 18th of November 2008 (Tokyo) and the 17th of November 2008 in the US.
