According to a new survey from IDC and sponsored by Facebook, 89% of 18-24 year old smartphone users pick up their mobile device within 15 minutes of waking up. And, perhaps more astonishingly, 74% grab their mobile phone immediately after waking up.

The survey focused on smartphone owners of iOS and Android devices between the  ages of 18-44.

The survey presents the desire for connectedness as the primary reason for the leash to the device.

In terms of mobile usage, the survey found that the most popular activities on mobile devices are email (78%), Facebook use (70%), text messaging (49%), talking on the phone (43%), messaging on Facebook (40%) and other social networking activities, such as Twitter, Linkedin and Instagram.
